All digital photographers want to get the right exposure. This task can be very challenging especially for beginners. Even experienced photographers don't get the right exposure all the time. It's a good thing that you can find excellent editing software like PhotoShop which makes it a lot easier to
edit the shots and make the necessary changes. However, it would be best if you were able to take the best shot the first time.
Beginners are too eager to use their new digital cam and so they often forget to check on the exposure settings of the camera. The exposure setting is set to automatic but if you know how to use your camera to the fullest, you will be able to control all your digital shots.
There are things that you need to consider to get the right exposure. Firstly, you must know the subject of the photo that you want to give emphasis. For instance, you want to emphasize the dark background, the bright sunlight, or the field of beautiful flowers in your photos. Changing the exposure settings on your camera is vital if you want to take beautiful and accurate shots.
It is up to you to decide whether you will set the exposure settings to automatic or you will take charge of controlling the exposure. Most of today's digital cameras have different exposure modes and photographers are free to choose the mode that will work for them. Some programs are also included that allow you to choose a certain program for action and landscape photos. When you select any of the programs the digital camera will automatically decide on the right aperture and shutter speed. The camera will automatically choose the best settings to take the photos. Leaving all the work to the camera may not be a very good idea and as you become a more experienced photographer, you should learn to adjust the exposure settings yourself.
Digital cameras have manual modes as well and settings for shutter speed and aperture. If you want to correctly adjust these settings, you should know what they are all about. Shutter speed refers to the length of time when the camera lens is open while aperture determines the lens opening size to incorporate light. When more light enters the lenses, it means increased aperture but the shutter speed should decrease so that the right exposure can be achieved.
When using the mode for aperture, you can easily control the lens opening. If you want to focus on a certain object, you need to make the lens opening smaller to get a sharp focus. Once you adjust the aperture, the shutter speed is also adjusted. This is great for taking close-up shots of any object. Taking photos of moving objects is a different matter. Adjusting the shutter speed settings is vital so that you can capture the motion. Increased shutter speed would mean decreased aperture but you must ensure that enough light passes through the lenses to get the right exposure. If you set the digital cam to priority mode (shutter speed), the matching aperture is adjusted automatically.
For total control of your shots, you can place the digital camera to manual mode. You will be required to do everything, adjusting the shutter speed, aperture, etc. If you want to bring out the true artist in yourself, switch to manual mode now. However, beginners are not advised to do this as they may not be knowledgeable enough.
There are times when photos don't come out as you want them to. It's a good thing that digital cameras allow you to see the photos before you print them out. Recheck the photos and see which ones are not very good. Take another shot to get better results.
Calculating exposure properly should be your main focus. You need to understand the relationship between f-stops and light sensitivity. Faster films are sensitive to light so you must consider the film you're using. SLRs usually have built in ISO settings. If you know all these things and how they work, you will not have a hard time in taking beautiful shots.
Getting the right exposure is your key to creative and outstanding photos. If you don't know much about exposure, try to learn as soon as possible.
